Last week the NCC proudly announced the launch of Digital Engineering Technology & Innovation (DETI), a strategic programme of the West of England Combined Authority delivered by the National Composites Centre (NCC) in partnership with industry, which aims to transform engineering for the digital era and inspire the next generation of engineers. 

We’ll be creating a new, diverse engineering community and establishing advanced digital tests beds across the region with one purpose in mind: to investigate, develop & demonstrate the application of advanced digital methods, tools, processes and skills needed to engineer sustainable products of the future and build a more resilient business enterprise.

This isn't just about composites, or only relevant to aerospace. It is also not only about product design or only I4.0 manufacturing. It’s about demonstrating where digital technologies can advance how products and processes advance and become smarter and how businesses can benefit from digital across the whole life cycle of the product (Design – Manufacturing – In-service)

We need inspiring, dynamic minds to make it happen and are looking for 2 new members to join our growing team of digital and IT specialists at the NCC.

We’re looking for a Chief Solutions Architect to own the strategic direction and development and deployment of our Digital test beds, acting a champion for digital change at the NCC and within industry.

Acting as a key technical point of contact, you'll define the technical direction for the sector by creating and maintaining technology roadmaps in line with the demands of industry. Supporting the development of the Digital Engineering capability, you'll focus on the future state of software and hardware architectures as part of future regional and national initiatives.

You have sound knowledge of a wide range of operating systems, databases and emerging technologies associated to OT, IOT, networking and cyber security. ROLE TITLE: Chief Solutions Architect – Digital Engineering
Reports to:
Head of Digital
Direct reports including contractors:
DevOps Team, Delivery Partners
Budget: None
Key relationships:
- Line manage and accountable for direct reports
- Functionally reporting into the Head of Digital (CTO Team), with sector alignment to the Digital Engineering Business Unit Director
- Working closely with the Chief Engineer, Digital Engineering Business Unit Director, Digital Engineering Programme Manager and Digital Engineering Market Development Manager to secure, define and deliver programmes within the Digital Engineering business unit
- Primary point of contact for Operational Technology (OT), Information Technology (IT), Internet of things (IOT) and other related software and digital technology customers within the Digital Engineering business unit
- Formulate and maintain relationships across the business and with external organisations e.g. suppliers and other Catapult centres to share best practise and create collaborative opportunities
- Close working relationship with IT operations unit at the NCC and other delivery partners and their teams, to secure specialist engineering resource and develop OT, IT, IOT and other related digital technical strategy
- Represents and advocates for the Digital Engineering business unit at technical forums
- Liaise between the Programme Managers and their teams, Delivery Partners, and customers (existing and potential) to develop new projects to identify, develop and support opportunities.
- To support the development of the Digital Engineering capability, particularly aligned to future state of OT, IT and IOT software and hardware architectures as part of future national and regional initiatives
- To establish and maintain, In collaboration with IT operations teams, an appropriate DevOps (development and testing) environment to explore OT, IT and IOT solutions architectures in an agile fashion
- To help secure future funding and deliver major IT related programmes of collaborative research and development within the domain of Digital Engineering
- Accountable for the technical definition and delivery of all IT related programmes / projects within the sector by providing technical governance and where relevant, acting as technical authority / independent reviewer
- Ensure Digital Engineering programme / project scope and deliverables meet customer requirements and expectations
- In coordination with the CTO, chief engineer and the Head of Digital lead the technical strategy for the Digital Engineering business unit, working with the Value Stream Managers, customers and wider industry to formulate and deliver technical roadmaps,
- To line manage and develop direct reports within the Digital Engineering business unit


- Provide the technical interface with relevant Industrial members within the sector, ensuring that their short and long term product / industrial requirements are captured and understood
- Working in co-ordination with NCC and other delivery partners IT operation units, Define the OT, IT and IOT solutions technical direction for the sector by formulating and maintaining sector technology roadmaps in line with customers and wider industry demand
- In co-ordination with the CTO, head of digital and value stream Managers, align capability development proposals with customer demand to generate technology roadmaps for the Digital Engineering business unit
- Ensure the team’s ability to meet customer demand by identifying capability gaps and working with the Value stream groups and Delivery Partners to secure necessary skills / equipment
- Provide specific OT, IT, IOT solution architecture technical governance across all programmes / projects to ensure quality is maintained
- Take ownership and accountability of the security, day to day operations and effectiveness of a Dev Ops environment for testing software and connectivity of devices prior to migration to production systems
- In coordination with the CTO, the Head of Digital and IT Operations teams, generate the technical framework for how work is conducted within the Digital Engineering business unit
- Provide technical governance and mentoring to TA’s / IR’s to ensure that project outputs meet customer requirements
- Draw upon own expertise to resolve complex technical issues affecting the Digital Engineering business unit
- Lead technical scoping activity for programmes within the Digital Engineering business unit and support bid writing for funding opportunities
- Continually develop own knowledge, expertise and network within the Digital Engineering sector

Customer Interaction & Networking

- Primary Digital Engineering technical point of contact with companies of all sizes
- Host technical road-mapping activity to identify customer short / long term needs and develop technical Digital Engineering strategy for the sector
- Work with Capability teams to integrate customer needs into wider business strategy
- Establish and maintain effective partnerships with customers and the wider industry
- Represent the Digital Engineering business unit in relevant technical forums, champion our technical strategy along with the wider UK Composites Strategy and the Local Industrial Strategy
Resource Management and Team Leadership
- Manage the Digital Engineering sector-based engineering resource; conduct PDR’s / PDP’s
- Identify IT technical requirements for programmes within the sector, working closely with Heads of Value Stream and Delivery Partners to secure appropriate resource
- Develop the DevOps Digital Engineering team, ensuring the necessary skills / expertise is acquired to meet demand
- Inspire and challenge the DevOps Digital Engineering project team to continually improve effectiveness and efficiency

- Masters in IT, software engineering, Computer Science other relevant degree / qualification

- Proven experience in engineering and software architecture design.

- In-depth understanding of coding languages (Java, JavaScript).

- Sound knowledge of various operating systems and databases and emerging technologies associated to OT, IOT, networking and cyber security

- Experience of people management

- Significant experience of providing technical governance and leadership to engineering programmes

- Experience of managing time, cost and quality in engineering projects

- Chartered Engineer with a professional institute 

- An established reputation for excellent knowledge in the IT / software engineering field and a track record of carrying out world class innovative research and development programmes.

- Experience of writing technical proposals for funding bodies such as TSB, EPSRC, EU Frameworks

- Broad knowledge of engineering or manufacturing industry

- Knowledge of IT operations management i.e. help desk etc
